SCC Theme and Focus “Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.” SCC’s theme is “Loving God, Serving People”. SCC Mission Statement We exist to express love for God and His love for every person; uniting people into a saving and growing relationship with Jesus Christ, and His Church, so that they may know and obey his Word, fulfilling His purposes in their lives. Vision We believe that God is calling SCC to be a Great Commandment and Great Commission church for the Solsberry area (our Jerusalem), Eastern Greene County and Southwestern Monroe County (our Judea and Samaria), and to the ends of the earth. We want to be intentional about sharing the Gospel and growing disciples in ways that effectively reach the Millennial and Centennial generations through active engagement of the Gen X, Boomer and Senior generations in outreach ministries and discipleship, and in so doing expand the impact and impact of the Kingdom of God wherever we can. A Brief History SCC was founded in 1914. In 1916 the congregation built its first building in Solsberry. In 1963 the congregation moved to the current location and built a new worship and education facility. In 1970, the church hired its first full-time minister. During his tenure, Sunday morning attendance rose from around 100 to more than 150. During the ensuing 20+ years, attendance rose and ebbed with high’s in the 160-180 range in the late 1980’s and lows around 120-30 range early 1990’s. In 2000 the congregation broke ground on a new worship/auditorium facility which was completed in 2002. A stewardship program preceded the building project which raised approximately ½ of the $650,000 cost of the facility outright, along with significant future commitments. Approximately $300,000 was borrowed. That note was repaid in less than 3 years from the date it was borrowed. Average weekly attendance was as high as 245 in 2005. Average attendance over the past two years has ranged between 160 – 190. We believe that 400 and 500 people would likely refer to Solsberry Christian Church as their “home church”. Elders, Deacons, and Leaders SCC currently has three elders and the senior minister serves as a preaching elder. The elders reach agreement on issues through prayer, discussion, deliberation, and more prayer. In matters of significance, a decision is not taken unless the elders are unified in purpose and thought. The elders often consult with the deacons and other ministry leaders in the church on significant issues. SCC has eight men who serve as deacons. The role of deacon has been transitioning from the “traditional” physical facilities role, to a broader “Acts 6” role. We are currently seeking to identify and call at least two additional elders and additional deacons as the Lord raises up. Worship The congregation moved from traditional piano/organ-driven hymn singing in the early-middle 1990’s to a blended worship style. The worship team currently consists of 3 – 4 singers, electric piano, electric bass, electric drums, and acoustic/rhythm guitar. We have a part-time worship coordinator who oversees the worship team, audio-visual team, and coordinators worship themes and seasonal programs with the Senior Minister. Youth and Children’s Ministry SCC’s Youth and Children’s Minister position has been vacant since May. A search conducted during the latter half of 2017 was not successful. A renewal of the search effort is planned to begin again soon. Beginning in early February, we are going to be hiring a part-time Children’s Ministry Coordinator who will be responsible for organizing and facilitating ministry to elementary and pre-school ages. A young woman from the church who is an elementary school teacher at Eastern Schools and is a mother of three elementary/pre-school age kids, with a passion for ministry, is filling this position. Facilities SCC owns 11 acres of land, approximately 8 of which is useable due to karst conditions and the state-mandated location of a significant septic mound system. SCC completed the construction of an auditorium facility in 2004 that can seat 330 – 350. This facility is attached to a facility that was built in 1963, which now contains the fellowship hall and approximately 16 classrooms and offices, as well as a full kitchen (approximately 17,000 square feet in all). The property includes approximately 120 paved parking spaces with another 50 – 60 gravel spaces, all directly adjacent to the facility. Both the auditorium and Fellowship Hall are equipped with multi-channel sound boards, video/data projectors, computers, and DVD capabilities. The potential exists for future expansion of the church campus footprint on three sides of the property. The church houses a food pantry of substantial size, that is a key component of a benevolence ministry that is based at SCC called Operation Outreach. This ministry provides food and occasional utility assistance to the needy in the community. Operation Outreach provides annual food give-away events at Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring vacation that typically serve 60 – 70 families and provides Christmas gifts of clothing and toys to as many as 200 children in the community. Location Solsberry is a rural community located approximately 15 miles, and 20-25 minutes southwest of Bloomington (home of Indiana University). It is about 75 minutes from Indianapolis (SR 37 and I-69), about 90 minutes from Evansville (I-69), and 2 hours from Louisville (SR 43, SR 54, SR 37, SR 60, I-65). Community The Solsberry community is part of Eastern Greene County, Indiana. Greene County is one of the largest and poorest counties in Indiana, but because of Solsberry’s proximity to both Bloomington, Indiana University, and the CRANE Naval Surface Warfare – all within 30 minutes of church – the community includes a wide socio-economic cross-section ranging from families that live in substantial prosperity to families that live in abject poverty interspersed throughout the community. Approximately 4,100 souls live within a five-mile radius of Solsberry, most of which within Eastern Greene County. However, approximately 10,000 live within an eight-mile radius of Solsberry, which would include the west side of Bloomington/southwest Monroe County. Schools Because there is no incorporated town or city in Eastern Greene County, the Eastern Greene Schools are the activity hub and focal point of the community. A new Eastern Greene High School facility was opened in 2008. The Eastern Greene Middle School (grades 5 – 8) and Elementary School (K- 4) share a separate facility that formerly included the high school. Both facilities are within ¼ mile of each other. The school is as open and receptive to area churches and student organized faith-based activities (e.g. See You at The Pole) as any public school corporation in the area, with an active and well-attended Good News Club ministry operates in the Elementary School. The school corporation enrolls approximately 1,300 students in K – 12 and is in Class 2A for all high school sports except football (1A).
