Job Description:

Sahel Academy

Background and Summary:   The purpose of SIM Niger is to make disciples where Christ is least known.  SIM Niger’s 100+ missionaries serve in a wide variety of ministries in numerous locations across the country. With the purpose of making disciples where Christ is least known, Sahel Academy contributes to this strategy by enabling many missionary families to continue their work amongst unreached people groups in Niger and neighboring West African countries. Most of Sahel Academy's students are children of international missionaries. Beyond missionary families, Sahel Academy opens 30% of its enrollment to English speaking students from families interested in securing a Christian education for their children.

Responsibilities:   Each high school teacher will be required to teach full time (approximately four to five classes/day). The teacher will:
1. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
2. Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
3. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
4. Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems as well as to communicate their successes and achievements.
5. Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the school.
6. Participate in leadership of extra-curricular activities such as student counsel, yearbook, community outreach, and student clubs.
7. Disciple students on a daily basis, taking care to teach from a biblical worldview.

Sahel Academy has an exciting outreach program providing weekly ministry opportunities for students and staff in the local community, as well as periodic weekend ministry trips to support missionary work in a town or village outside of the city of Niamey. Possibilities also exist for discipleship of students, friendship evangelism with national staff, Bible teaching, and local church involvement, all undergirded by the development of personal relationships.

Required training:   Teacher training

Recommended Experience:   Experienced teachers desired; however, the minimum requirement is a Bachelor's degree. Certification as a teacher (for US teachers at least with ACSI) is desired.

Personality Issues/ Cultural Considerations:   Because our teaching staff and student body are multi-national and multi-cultural, we desire sensitivity to cultural differences, ability to adjust expectations and be flexible, and "teachability" and willingness to learn from others. Specifically, we desire the ability to work as a member of a diverse team and willingness to work in a simple work environment.

Language Requirements:   English: Competent (Native/mother tongue); French: Basic (Language Training available)

Compensation:   SIM personnel are volunteers and rely on God’s provision for their living and ministry needs. Support requirements are based on length and location of service, family size, and ages of children. Support raising training is provided through SIM.
